FronTierras: A Zine for Border + Art + Environment

FronTierras Zine

FronTierras is a creative and informative zine for environmental, scientific, and literary thinking when it comes to resisting border walls and environmental practices that endanger borderlands ecosystems.

Walls don’t work; but they do impact border ecosystems.

Border environments are some of the most biodiverse regions in the world; to protect them, humans must be creative and think in multispecies ways.

When we advocate for the multispecies world, we also advocate for ourselves.

This issue explores the impact of border wall construction and infrastructure on the crossing corridors and futures of wildlife that move through the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. It works at the juncture of science, the arts, and borderlands culture to consider the intertwining, interconnected, and multispecies impacts of border wall building in this majestic and biodiverse environment.

Border Wildlife Study Visualization

The US-Mexico border wall completely stops the crossborder movements of large mammals in the Arizona-Sonora borderlands, particularly: black bears, pronghorn, deer, turkeys, and most likely, Mexican gray wolves and jaguar. According to the innovative Harrity et al., 2024 study, only 1 in 10 animals will successfully cross when they encounter the wall.
